The first rated R movie I saw was Purple Rain. Talk about an initiation. We were at my aunt's house, and I was playing Barbie's with my younger cousin. My older cousin and her friends had rented it on VHS and put it on the downstairs TV, promptly ending the Barbie party. The adults were clueless, my mom was upstairs socializing and smoking with my aunt and her friends. It was fall 1984 or winter 1985. I was eight years old and I remember being shocked, mystified and drawn in because of the music. The sex scenes tripped me out, I couldn't understand why Appolonia would let Prince put his hand down her pants. I didn't grasp the plot and I haven't seen it since but the music has stayed with me. I cook to Prince. I work out to Prince. I clean the house to Prince. I used to listen to Prince when afflicted with unrequited affection. He made vulnerability and desire cool, and he made heartache something you can move to. As a musical neophyte, I am unable to grasp his mastery in making his music (A college roommate of mine dated a guy that was a music major and broke down Prince to me once. I didn't completely get it. But I understood enough to understand that Prince was a literal genius.) Anyway, happy Friday. Take Me With You is sweet and sexy. My favorite track off of Purple Rain. Please clean to this, dance to this, hell, finger someone to this! (with consent of course)
As always with Prince and copyrights, I've included multiple links.
